Katy Sexton is Britain’s only female World Champion in the pool.
She first broke onto the International scene in 1995 as a promising 13 year old with a Bronze medal performance at the European Youth Olympics following this up with a Silver medal in the European Junior Championships in 1997.
She then won the Commonwealth title for 200m Backstroke in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur as a 16 year old – a fantastic performance for a young woman and one that heralded her arrival as a force to be reckoned with on the backstroking world scene.
Her development continued as she dominated domestic competition for the next 5 years and culminated in a stunning World title over the 200m backstroke in Barcelona where she destroyed the field to finish 3 body lengths clear of her nearest rival.
Katy’s career was then blighted by numerous shoulder injuries but she is well on the road to her best and is looking to lead Great Britain’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay to a medal in Beijing Olympics 2008
Katy lives in Portsmouth with her fiancé and continues to train at the club where her career began as an 8 year old.
